Internship Application for JVS Journals

Purpose: Following a highly successful first year, the Journal of Vascular Surgery is continuing the internship program geared at both senior integrated vascular residents as well as vascular fellows.  The program is designed for those who have an interest in learning the JVS Journals review and editorial process. The goals of the program are to teach the next generation of vascular surgeons how to be good reviewers of clinical and basic scientific research papers and to diversify the reviewer pool to better reflect practitioners in the field, and the patients we care for. Interns will be mentored by senior editorial staff throughout the process and will be expected to review a select number of papers and produce at least one co-authored commentary.

Learning objectives:

1.    Understanding the JVS journals’ format

2.    Understanding the peer reviewer’s tasks and responsibilities

3.    Determining reviewer eligibility, based on knowledge about the manuscript topic, lack of conflict, and diversity of experience

4.    Developing a sufficiently detailed and respectful critique aimed at improving the paper

5.    Learning how to detect potential unconscious bias within experimental methodology and review processes, and limiting its perpetuation

6.    Determining if the paper should be accepted, revised or rejected and providing a grade for the paper

Educational content of the internship will include review of a variety of topics offered through JVS leadership. Interns will also be expected to participate in editorial sessions aimed at understanding how race, sex, gender, and other intersecting identities may influence not only data collection and presentation, but also its interpretation. This is a required and key element of this program.

Format of the Program: Interns will work with mentors who are Editors, Associate and Assistant Editors of JVS, JVS -VLD, JVS-CIT and JVS-VS, and will be assigned manuscripts to formally review in a timely manner, adhering to the journals’ review timelines. Intern reviews will be critically evaluated by mentors for style and content. Intern-generated reviews may be included in the final critique of the paper. Interns will review a minimum of ten manuscripts over the training period, and write at least one commentary, co-authored by their mentor. In addition, interns will be expected to participate in the JVS sessions at the VAM, as well as the SCVS, and AVF annual meetings. Interns will meet with their mentors and the coordinator virtually on a regular basis. The internship will last for 12 months.

Assignments: Interns will be assigned to mentors who are Editors/Associate Editors/Assistant Editors of JVS, JVS -VL, JVS-CIT and JVS-VS. Additionally, experience with social media content, SVS Connect, graphic abstract design and statistical analysis will be available

Compensation: No financial compensation is associated with this internship. However, graduates of the program are eligible to review for the journal upon completion of their residency/fellowship, may be expedited to the role of key reviewer in the future (based on quality and timeliness of their reviews), and will be recognized with an official  certificate and announced publicly at the VAM and at the SCVS and AVF annual meetings. Additional benefits include reviewer CME credits as well as limited publication fee waivers.
