CNETS Research Initiatives Survey

Dear all,

CNETS Canada recently held its first Scientific and Medical Advisory Board (SMAB) in Toronto. The SMAB is composed of prominent Canadian physicians and scientists passionate about the research, diagnosis and treatment of NET cancer. This distinguished group of individuals from across Canada will help us to better define our research priorities and endeavours.  During its first meeting the SMAB identified 3 research projects that CNETS Canada should consider for implementation. While we would love to undertake all 3 projects at once, our limited resources will only enable us to focus on 1 or 2 over the next 2-3 years. The intent of this survey is to ask your considered opinion on these 3 projects and to rank them in order of priority.

Here is a brief description of each project :

Project 1.    Clinical Fellowship Scholarship to Educate New Health Care Professionals in NETs
Doctors are generally not well aware, or lack education about NETs. People are, therefore, detected and diagnosed late in the disease. Affected patients lose the advantages of early detection and cutting edge treatment. In order to better educate doctors, we need a multi-pronged approach, including teaching new doctors across the country about NET cancer.  Clinical Fellowships training in centres that have multi-disciplinary teams partially sponsored by CNETS Canada would be an excellent approach.

Project 2.   Access to Reference Pathologists as part of a Multidisciplinary Team

Well-structured multidisciplinary care teams are crucial in diagnosing and treating NET cancer.  Good cancer care requires a team approach with many medical disciplines, including pathology and diagnostic imaging.  It also requires a multi-disciplinary Tumour Board in a Centre of Excellence based in a tertiary centre.  Access to appropriate pathology, especially referenced pathologists pathologists i.e. pathologists with experience with NET cancer, is crucial. We need accurate and complete pathology as quickly as possible so the reports must be done by the right person the first time.  CNETS Canada has an important role in supporting the concept of developing Centres of Excellence and defining what elements these must include. CNETS Canada could put resources to help centers develop and foster a multidisciplinary team approach for NETs.

Project 3. Gallium 68 PET Diagnosis and Lutetium177 Peptide Receptor Radionuclide Therapy for NET cancer

Pharmaceutical companies have no commercial interest to market these molecules. Health Canada will not consider approving these compounds for sale in Canada because there are no Canadian clinical trials. Two centres currently have open trials, Edmonton and London, but they are not registration trials for Health Canada’s purposes. In Ontario, Cancer Care Ontario has agreed to put funding into a 4 site PRRT clinical trial. CNETS Canada could allocate resources to support researchers in other provinces who want to start a PRRT trial by doing advocacy and approaching provincial bodies for funding.

We will inform you of the results of this survey as soon as possible.

You input is very important. Thank you for your participation.
