This one-round survey explores reflux surgery in the setting of obesity. Despite guideline support for gastric bypass in GERD with obesity, major controversies and practice variation remain, potentially influenced by surgeons’ subspecialty. The aim is to map current worldwide practice, identify areas of disagreement, and define priorities for future research to support more standardized care.
The survey will be launched during the ESDE European Conference on Esophageal Diseases (ESDE-EC), held in Cologne, Germany, from 18 to 20 March 2026, and will be conducted in a single round.
ELIGIBILITY AND DISSEMINATION
This survey is designed and conducted by an international group of surgeons involved in bariatric surgery, upper gastrointestinal surgery, and anti-reflux surgery. It is open to all surgeons involved in bariatric and/or anti-reflux/upper GI surgery.
We encourage you not only to participate but also to share the survey with surgical colleagues who are eligible to answer this questionnaire. The higher the number of responses, the more accurate and representative the overview of current practice will be.
OUTPUTS
Results will be summarized and shared within the surgical community and will also be submitted for publication to a peer-reviewed journal.
ESTIMATED TIME
Estimated time to complete: approximately 10–15 minutes, depending on your answers, as the survey includes branching and you may not see all questions.
DATA PROTECTION AND CONFIDENTIALITY
You will be asked to provide an email address for study administration (for example, to prevent duplicate entries and, if applicable, to share a brief results summary). Any potentially identifying information (including your email address) will be removed after data collection, and results will be analyzed and reported only in aggregate.
CONSENT STATEMENT
By providing your email address and submitting the questionnaire, you confirm that you have read and understood the following. Your participation is voluntary. You may withdraw at any time by discontinuing the survey before submission. You consent to participate in this research project and will answer the questionnaire as accurately as possible. You may complete the questionnaire only once. Participation in this survey does not confer eligibility for collaborative authorship on resulting publications.
