How we bring our patients with us on the new journey is going to take explaining, understanding and time. With Covid we accepted that we could be met with some resistance due to the uncertainty. Now a year into the pandemic, it has shown us how changes can be made. GP appointments continues to increase and Covid has identified that not everything is diagnosed in an face to face appointment and using other methods such as video or telephone consultations allowing patients a response within 24 hours. Previous to Covid patients on average waited up to 2-3 weeks to see their GP.
It will be a steep learning curve and our plans will be under constant review. During covid patients were under the illusion that strict NHS guidelines meant that the GP Practice were not busy or seeing patients face to face. The demand for appointments increased during the pandemic. No of GP, Nurse Practitioner Appointments Booked March 2019 to March 2020 = 28505 March 2020 to March 2021 = 32345
Results indicated that by using alternative methods: Telephone & Video consultations, Online services, eConsults, Face to Face, we were able to increase patient access by 12% on 2019-20 year.
