Volunteer Information

HOW TO SUBMIT A VOLUNTEER REQUEST:

Select 3 or more different date choices. Please do not complete more than one survey.

Your request will be responded to via email. Your volunteer date is not set until you receive an email confirmation from BTS House Management.

Volunteer requests are responded to in the order they are received, as quickly as possible. The volume of requests received is quite high; therefore please allow us 5-7 business days to respond to your request.

There are six (6) usher slots available for shows in the Virginia Wimberly Theatre, two (2) available for shows in the Roberts Studio Theatre, and one (1) or two (2) available for shows in Deane Hall. Be aware that spots fill up quickly, especially for shows in the Roberts Studio Theatre. If you submit a request and all ushering slots have been filled, your name will be placed on a waiting list. If a spot opens up, the first person on the waiting list is offered that spot, and so on down the list as spots become available. In respect to your fellow volunteers on the waiting list, if you find you are no longer able to make your ushering shift, please send an email to volunteer@bostontheatrescene.com or call 617 933 8670 so we can offer the spot to another volunteer.

GENERAL INFORMATION:

Once you've received your email confirmation, you are set to usher. Please arrive at the Calderwood 1 hour before the performance begins. For example: A 8pm curtain time would indicate volunteers should be at the theater by 7pm. Volunteers should come dressed in nice black clothing - no jeans, sweatpants, t-shirts or sneakers. Volunteers dressed inappropriately may be asked to leave. Please make sure to arrive ON TIME AND READY TO WORK for your ushering shift. If you arrive more than 15 minutes late, you may be asked to reschedule for another date or be turned away. Parking in the South End is always difficult, regardless of the day-- allow ample time to find a parking space. If you find yourself running late, call us at 617 933 8608 to let us know that you are on your way.

During your shift, you will be asked to stuff programs, direct patrons to their seats, and answer basic questions about the theater. After the performance, you are expected to stay and help return the theatre to a performance ready state by picking up programs and any trash that has accumulated over the course of the performance. Be prepared to stay about 15 minutes after the performance.

COVID-19 SAFETY:

Through October 31st, all patrons, volunteers, and staff must be masked and present either proof of vaccination or negative COVID test in order to enter the theatre. More information here.

CODE OF RESPECT:

In July 2021, the Huntington adopted a new Code of Respect for all staff, patrons, guest artists, and volunteers. When you complete the sign-up survey you will be asked to affirm that you have read and understand the Code of Respect:

The Huntington aspires to create an inclusive and welcoming space for all communities that gather here. We are committed to learning as an institution and encourage all to join us in crafting and sustaining an equity-driven culture. We believe mutual respect is the foundation of a healthy community. Therefore, The Huntington will not tolerate racism, discrimination, or harassment of any kind.

Thank you for creating this community with us. We are glad you are here.

Please feel free to email volunteer@bostontheatrescene.com with any questions. We are looking forward to having you all back in our spaces!
