Emotionally Based School Non-Attendance (EBSNA) Survey: Understanding Current Experiences in Surrey

This survey aims to understand the current experiences of children and young people who struggle with school-based anxiety and attendance (EBSNA), as well as the experiences of their families.

It follows on from our original survey, which ran in 2021 and had a significant impact on EBSNA work across Surrey. The findings were used to inform the development of whole-school training and resources, while also creating an important focus on the challenges faced by children, young people and their families.

Crucially, the 2021 survey highlighted the pain, isolation and difficulties that many parent carers were experiencing. Their voices helped to ensure that the lived experience of EBSNA families was recognised and placed at the heart of the conversation.

This updated survey has been amended to reflect the current experiences of children, young people and their families. It has also been requested by professionals across Surrey to help ensure that the work, support and resources being developed are genuinely reflective of lived experience and the challenges families are facing today.

We hope this survey will have a far-reaching impact in helping us to understand EBSNA more fully and, most importantly, in shaping support, training and resources that make a meaningful difference to children, young people and their families.

We are truly grateful to you for taking the time to complete this survey. Every response matters. The more experiences we hear, the stronger the evidence we can build and the greater the impact we can make.

Thank you for sharing your experience and helping to shape the future of EBSNA support across Surrey all responses are completely anonymous and no personal details are captured unless you choose to share your email address at the very end of the survey which is entirely optional.

The survey should take approximately 15–20 minutes to complete.
