We’re a volunteer community group of people who live in Riddell and around the south of the Macedon Range.

If you’re new to Riddell, a long-time resident or visitor, find out how much you know about the landscape around the town.

Barrm Birrm is a subdivision of 162 lots from the 1970s where building has never been permitted

The area has had very little disturbance and hasn’t had a fire in over 100 years

The subdivision went on the books in the 1890s, without much scrutiny

50 lots are now owned by Macedon Ranges Shire Council, after people handed their titles over to the Shire

Other lots are changing hands, and the asking price is going up

Riddell residents have walked in the area for the 50 years since it was subdivided

The named roads in Barrm Birrm are public roads, so there’s no problem walking here. The rest is a patchwork of private owners and Shire lots, where walking is trespassing, strictly speaking

Riddells Creek Landcare was set up in 2005 to look after Barrm Birrm

In its 2018 Biodiversity Strategy, Macedon Ranges Shire said that Barrm Birrm is a valuable bushland area that needs protection

The new Shire gates and signs have reduced vehicle entry, but trail bikes are still regular visitors and cause damage to the delicate surface

The growth of Riddell makes Barrm Birrm a place where people can be in nature, with all the benefits that brings
