WEN Queensland Mentoring Program

The WEN Mentoring Program provides members with the opportunity to be mentored by experienced economists to empower them building their careers in economics.

Once you become part of the WEN Mentoring Program, as a mentee you will be matched with an experienced economist for approximately a year (depending on your and mentor’s availability). The program will enable you to work towards your career development and achieving your goals.

The Role of Mentor

Depending on the purpose of the mentoring relationship, you can expect to receive support in many ways through:

·       Mentor’s advice and coaching
·       Resources
·       Potential opportunities
·       Guidance regarding career opportunities
        -   career options
        -   skill development
        -   working towards promotions

First Mentor and Mentee meeting

After introducing yourself and informing your mentor of your objectives, you may consider the following subjects to discuss in your first meeting:
·       Purpose - discuss what your objective is in seeking mentoring. It is important to spend some time reflecting on this before your first meeting. Objectives could include next steps in your career, building skills, and/or developing your network.

Communication - what is the method of communication that will suit suits both you and your mentor (e.g. face-to-face, skype or phone calls). How often will you meet and for how long?

While this program can be beneficial to you and create a work placement or job opportunity for you this should not be the expectation of the program.
