Facilities Options

As the Vestavia Hills Board of Education gets closer to its vote on the facilities options for the Vestavia Hills School System, Vestavia Voice wants to hear what you think. Please read each option and rank it as how favorable you view it and stay tuned for the results. 

Question Title

* 1. OPTION 1: Current elementary school alignments and current feeder patterns. Pizitz students, 6th-8th, move to the Berry campus. Vestavia Hills Elementary Central students, 4th-5th, move to the Pizitz campus. VHEC campus becomes an academies facility, where students can specialize in specific programs in 9th-12th.

Cost: $54.8 million
Additional operating costs: $1.7 million
Pros: Does not require rezoning, is the cheapest option, adds the academies program.
Cons: Unbalanced elementary school alignment, does not accommodate for high school growth, and does not identify if the cost of the academies is justified by growth.

* 2. OPTION 2: Creates alignment at elementary schools K-5th. Pizitz students, 6th-8th, move to Berry campus. VHEC students move to Pizitz campus, which becomes K-5th under new alignment. VHEC campus becomes an academies facility, where students can specialize in specific programs 9th-12th.

Additional operating costs: $1.7 million
Pros: Still the cheapest cost option and adds the academies program.
Cons: Requires rezoning along the U.S. 31 corridor, does not address growth at the high school and does not identify if the cost of the academies is justified by growth.

* 3. OPTION 3: Current elementary school alignments. Both middle schools become 6th-9th. Pizitz students move to Berry campus, and are joined by U.S. 31 corridor 9th graders. Liberty Park Middle School becomes 6th-9th, and are joined by students in east section of city. VHEC students, 4th-5th, move to Pizitz campus, and the VHEC campus is preserved for future use. Vestavia Hills High School becomes 10th-12th.

Cost: $61.5 million
Additional operating costs: $2.2 million
Pros: Offsets VHHS growth, addresses system-wide growth over next 10-15 years and preserves the central campus for a future use.
Cons: More expensive, does not offer total elementary school alignment.

* 4. OPTION 4: Aligns alignment at elementary schools K-5th. Both middle schools become 6th-9th. Pizitz students move to Berry campus, and are joined by U.S. 31 corridor 9th graders. Liberty Park Middle School becomes 6th-9th, and are joined by students in east section of city. VHEC students move to Pizitz, which becomes K-5th under new alignment. VHEC campus becomes an academies facility, where students can specialize in specific programs 9th-12th, and VHHS changes to 10th-12th.

Cost: $65.6 million
Additional operating costs: $2.7 million
Pros: Offsets growth at VHHS and addresses system-wide growth over next 10-15 years. Balances alignment for elementary schools and creates the new academies program.
Cons: Highest cost option and would require rezoning.

* 5. HYBRID OPTION 5: This was proposed at the April 12 BOE meeting by Nancy Corona. Creates alignment at elementary schools K-5th. Both middle schools become 6th-9th. Pizitz students move to Berry campus, and are joined but U.S. 31 corridor 9th graders. Liberty Park Middle School becomes 6th-9th, and are joined by students in Cahaba Heights and Liberty Park. VHEC students move to Pizitz, which becomes K-5th under new alignment. VHEC campus is moved offline and preserved for future use, and VHHS changes to 10th-12th.

Cost: $60.6 (Option 4 minus $5 million of academies costs removed).
Additional operating costs: $2.2 million (Option 4 minus $500,000 for academies operations removed).
Pros: Saves the VHEC campus, cheaper than Option 4. Gives the board more time to talk about the academies concept.
Cons: Price, would require some rezoning.
