Welcome to the Expulsion and Suspension survey!

This is a survey for parents and guardians with children 3-8 years of age in Alaska. The Governor’s Council on Disabilities and Special Education is gathering information to work out solutions for reducing and preventing exclusionary practices for young children in early childhood (child care, Head Start, pre-elementary) and school environments.

The Council wants to know more about the use of supports and resources and prevention/ intervention practices the early childhood program and schools may have used and how you may have been or not been involved in the process. This information will help inform state policy makers and to advocate for the increase of resources available to families and early childhood programs to support children’s social emotional development and reduce exclusionary practices.

If you are unable to complete the online survey (and would prefer a hard copy), need assistance completing it, or have questions about the survey or any of the Council’s activities, please call the Council toll-free (in Alaska) at 1-888-269-8990, 907-269-8462 (in Anchorage), or email Elena Markova at: elena.markova@alaska.gov

Your answers are voluntary. You can skip any questions you want. You can stop taking the survey at any time.

Thank you for your feedback!

Definitions of Expulsion and Suspension

In-School Suspensions could look like disciplining a child by sending the child out of the classroom, such as to the director/ principles office. Out-of-school suspensions could look like asking a family to pick up their child early because of behavioral issues (e.g., biting, hitting, and not following directions)

Expulsion could look like telling a family that they will need to find another early childhood program because the child is not a “good fit” for the program or that the program can ‘no longer support’ their child.

‘Soft’ expulsion could look like asking the family repeatedly to pick their child up early because of behavior issues and requiring them to leave or miss work frequently.
