CPMA has agreed to work with CFIA to survey our members requesting input on priorities for opening new markets for the importation of new products into Canada. The approval of new products from new origins requiring a Pest Risk Analysis (PRA) can be a long, complex process for which CFIA receives many requests. Going forward, CPMA has agreed to provide our Pest Risk Analysis (PRA) prioritization preferences to CFIA on an annual basis.

The CFIA has compiled a list of PRA requests received for new horticulture products intended for consumption (fruits, vegetables, nuts, etc.) from new countries of origin that have not yet been actioned. Prioritization of this list will help CFIA to better understand industry priorities for new import market access.

CPMA requests your input to establish a ranking of PRA priorities for 2020 by completing the survey below by Friday, March 6, 2020.

Please be aware of the following:
  • Respondents may also identify other commodities where they see a need exists to import items not already authorized for importation into Canada.
  • It is important to note that any commodities selected as top priorities will require that a prioritization questionnaire be completed and submitted to CFIA by the requesting organization.
  • A review of the Preparedness Checklist on the CFIA website will provide an overview of the information that will be requested on the questionnaire.
  • The exporting country’s National Plant Protection Organization (NPPO) must be willing to collaborate with CFIA during the PRA process.
  • The requesting organization is encouraged to work with their exporters to ensure that the NPPO of the exporting country is supportive of the PRA and willing to work with CFIA before submitting their PRA request.
The CPMA Plant Health Working Group (PHWG) will review all information received and create a PRA priority list for submission to the CFIA Plant Health and Biosecurity Directorate. CPMA’s PRA priority ranking will be considered by the CFIA when initiating import market access work.

Any specific information provided in this questionnaire will be kept confidential and will not be shared outside of CPMA.  The results of the survey will be aggregated for review by the PHWG and submission to the CFIA.

Please submit your feedback by March 6, 2020. If you have any questions, please contact Shannon Sommerauer at ssommerauer@cpma.ca  or 613-226-4187 x 235.
