11 Australians out of 100 identifying themselves belonging to the LGBTIQ community, we all know Central Coast community also comprises of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer or Intersex people with an estimated LGBTIQ popuation of almost 32,000.
ISSUES FACED BY LGBTIQ PEOPLE
Many LGBTIQ people lead safe, healthy and active lives, enjoying high levels of wellbeing and contributing greatly to the rich diversity and vibrancy of their communities.
LGBTIQ people can also experience marginalisation, stigma, discrimination and social exclusion due to their sexuality or gender identity, which can have a detrimental impact on their health and wellbeing, including diminished capacity and resilience and a lack of willingness to access health and other services.
· LGBTIQ people have the highest rates of suicidality of any population in Australia and half of transgender people have attempted suicide at least once in their life.
· 61% of LGBTIQ and gender questioning young Australians reported experiencing verbal abuse because of homophobia or transphobia.
· 90% of LGBTIQ respondents to a recent South Australian survey indicated they had at times avoided public affection of their partner for fear of being victimised or abused.
