Overview and Eligibility

The COA Board if Directors recognizes the exceptional accomplishments of a “Large” COA Branch (more than 60 members) and a “Small" COA Branch (less than 60 members) at each annual meeting held in conjunction with the USPHS Symposium. These awards are called the Large Branch of the Year Award & the Small Branch of the Year Award.

Any branch not recognized at the most recent annual meeting is eligible for consideration. If the Board finds no branch deserving, no award will be given for that year.

Selection of Award
The COA Awards Committee will review the nominations presented to the Board of Directors and will make recommendations for review of the entire Board. The Awards Committee will consider all material provided with the nomination packet. The Committee will pay special attention to branch accomplishments. The Committee will give additional weight to accomplishments of branches that have been in existence five (5) years or less.

In considering the merits of the respective nominees, the Awards Committee will give about 50% weighting to a global assessment of Branch esprit de corps, enthusiasm, and the relative impact of Branch activities/accomplishments as described in the nomination. Examples are: notable community or facility-based projects, successful collaborations with other Branches, and effective local and/or national advocacy for commissioned officer interests. Note that the emphasis should be on activities that are completed or substantially underway, rather than planned future activities. Special consideration will be given to Local Branches that have improved dramatically over past years in terms of increased membership or depth and breadth of meeting programs, and/or extent of community activities.

In addition, the Awards Committee will give about 50% weighting cumulatively to the following factors:
* The percentage of officers in the local area who are COA members.
* The frequency of Branch meetings. This may include other than face-to-face meetings with adequate description.
* The degree of participation and scope of topics presented at general meetings of the Branch.
* The extent to which the national COA Office has received positive and/or negative feedback on Local Branch activities from members or others.
* The responsiveness of Branch officers/members to requests for information, administrative documentation, proxy selection, etc. as requested by the national COA Office or the Board of Directors
* The extent to which the Branch participates in activities (e.g., committees and programs) benefiting the national COA or Commissioned Officer Foundation.
