Nick Timothy MP's Survey: The right to a trial by jury

Dear Constituent,

The Government has announced that jury trials will be scrapped for crimes carrying sentences of less than three years.

This represents a significant change to one of the most longstanding features of our constitution.

Yet, rather than addressing the court backlog through comprehensive reform, Keir Starmer and David Lammy are instead choosing to vandalise our ancient constitutional liberties.

David Lammy previously described jury trials as 'fundamental to our democratic settlement'.

Now the Government is curtailing them, and ministers have acknowledged that Labour will not eliminate the backlog before the next election.

I would welcome your views on this. Please let me know what you think by completing this short survey. Thanks and best wishes,
Nick Timothy, Member of Parliament for West Suffolk
Have your say
1.Do you believe it is right for the Government to abolish an ancient liberty such as the right to trial by jury for a large category of offences?
2.Instead of abolishing jury trials, do you think the Government should focus on making practical changes such as increasing court sitting days, making better use of underused courtrooms, giving the Lord Chancellor the power to issue new sentencing guidance and making savings by abolishing the Sentencing Council?
3.Do you think implementing these changes will mark the beginning of the end of jury trials completely, with further restrictions to come in future?
