Translator Work-Related Quality of Life (T-WRQoL) survey [US 2026] |

The purpose
The purpose of this survey is to measure the quality of the working lives of translators, particularly the effects of technologies and other recent changes in the translation industry. Our final aim is to understand the factors that are affecting the working lives of translators and how they can lead to an improvement in working conditions.
Participation
Participation is voluntary. You may choose not to take part in the study. You may start participating and change your mind and stop participation. If you wish to stop, simply close your web browser.
To take this survey, you need to be a freelance translator and are aged 18 and older. You may also have other jobs (for example, working as an in-house translator, a translation company owner or a language teacher), but all or part of your paid work has to be freelance translation (including machine translation post-editing [MTPE]).
What participation involves
You will answer a series of questions about different aspects of your working life as a translator, such as work satisfaction, work-life balance, perceptions about translation technologies, etc. You will also provide demographic information such as age, working hours and specialized areas. In addition, there is one optional, open question to ask your opinions about the topic of the survey. The questions are personal but are not expected to be sensitive. It will take about 10-15 minutes to complete the survey.
Incentives
There is no monetary payment to participants of this survey and it is unlikely that you will benefit directly from participating in this study. However, what we learn will help inform the translation community about translators' working lives and eventually to improve translators' working conditions.
Use of your data
We do not collect personal information that can identify you. We do not collect your IP address of the device you use to take part in this survey either. There is one open question in the survey. If you write any information that can identify individuals in the answer, that information will be anonymized at the first possible opportunity. Only summary results of the study may be used in academic journal articles and conferences.
All members of the research team will have access to your anonymous data. Other people may need to see the anonymized information we collect about you to make sure that we are conducting this study in a safe and appropriate manner, including auditors at Kansai University and other agencies with appropriate permission.
Your anonymous data will be stored, used, and shared with others for future research studies without additional consent from you. This may include sharing your anonymous data with other researchers, journals, and data repositories.
Ethical approval
This project has received ethical approval from the Faculty of Foreign Language Studies Ethics Committee at Kansai University, Japan.
