European Survey on assisted suicide and euthanasia (ASAE)
in psychiatric patients

The terminology regarding different ways of support for people wishing to end their lives is controversial. Here, we use “assisted suicide” for situations, where the suicidal person ends his or her life himself, by his or her own action. The assistant’s support is restricted to e.g. providing a lethal drug. We use the term “euthanasia” for situations were another person, e.g. a physician, administers the lethal drug or otherwise actively kills the suicidal person.
