Purpose and Procedures

Purpose of the Research—Romantic relationships take many forms in emerging adulthood and at times, they tend to become violent and abusive. Yet, despite the urgency to leave a life altering/threatening situation, people stay in the relationship. This study is being conducted to find a correlation between a person’s attraction to a partner and previous or current relationship history of violent tendencies. Through the responses from this survey, I hope to learn whether attraction plays a role in a person’s will to stay in an abusive relationship.

Expected Duration of participation—The estimated time to complete the Attraction survey is 15 minutes.

Description of the procedures Once you consent to participation in the study, you will be asked to participate in the following procedures:

You will initially be screened to determine your eligibility for participating in the study. This screening will involve demographic questions in the beginning of the survey, in which you, the participant, will express your gender, age, race, and relationship status. You must be between the ages of 18 and 26 years or older to participate in this survey. If you meet those requirements, then you will be directed to the next page which contains a survey of 31 items. After completion of the survey you will be directed to submit your responses. Once responses have been submitted, you may exit the page. All results will remain anonymous.

Study Procedures— Only after the subject has given her/ his written consent will the survey be conducted. Once all data is collected from the surveys, it will be evaluated for correlations. There will be a comparison between participants who have an abusive relationship history and participants who have a non-abusive relationship history. All data will be password protected and collected through Survey Monkey. As well, any personal information submitted will remain unidentified to uphold confidentiality. All data will be stored securely and not accessible to anyone other than the researcher and McNair supervisor. Following the completion of the study, all electronic data will be destroyed for purposes of confidentiality.
