1. Background 

Pasifika Medical Association Scholarships
In 2018 the Pasifika Medical Association Group launched seven scholarships to assist Pacific people into medical and health-related careers. The scholarships have all been named after life members of the PMA who have given exemplary service to improving the health of Pacific people in New Zealand and/ or the region. The mentioned scholarships are awarded on a yearly bases as a one-off grant. Scholarship recipients can use this grant for tuition costs or study-related costs and may also use some of the grants to contribute to the living cost of the recipient whilst they are studying.

Under Graduate Nursing Scholarships for 2019
Two scholarship grants of $10,000.00 are available for undergraduate nursing students enrolled in a Bachelor of Nursing or direct entry Master of Nursing (undergraduate) Programme in 2019.  The Violani “Iiolahia Wills Scholarship and the Christina Atoa Tapu Scholarship will be awarded to an indigenous Pacific nursing student undertaking their nursing studies at an approved NZQA accredited tertiary provider in New Zealand. Applications will be considered from students who already receive other scholarship grants not exceeding $5,000.00 per annum.  

The scholarship will only be awarded once to the successful recipients during the period of undergraduate nursing studies.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for this scholarship the applicant must:

·       Be of an indigenous Pacific ethnic group.
·       Be a New Zealand resident - Citizen or Permanent Residence
·       Be enrolled in the current year in a Bachelor of Nursing or direct entry Master of Nursing programme in New Zealand
·       Be engaged and connected with their Pacific nursing community and /or community.
·       Show evidence or aspire to be a leader in their community or nursing fraternity
·       Provide evidence of good standing in the community (x2 reference letter from a non-relative or family acquaintance)

Conditions of Acceptance
·       Be willing to participate in events organised by the PMA
·       Will attend a minimum of 1 PMA event per year over the course of their student years.
·       Be agreeable to having their photo taken and used for scholarship promotional purpose, communication and PMA reports.
·       Be engaged in the work of the PMA group.
·       Sign up as a PMA member
·       Recipients must undertake to enroll continuously in their programme of study (except in cases where there are compelling medical reasons or adverse personal circumstances beyond the recipient’s control).
