Earlier this year, the Washington state legislature made major changes to our school discipline laws. The new law:
- Puts new time limits on the length of suspensions and expulsions;
- Puts new limits on the reasons students can be suspended or expelled for more than 10 days;
- Requires school districts to give students a chance to keep learning during a suspension or expulsion with educational services that are “comparable, equitable and appropriate”; and
- Requires districts to hold “culturally responsive and culturally sensitive” reengagement meetings with families and students who are suspended or expelled for more than 10 days to plan together for the student’s return to school.
The DETAILS HAVE NOT YET BEEN DECIDED on what these changes will look like for students and schools.

The State Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) will rewrite our state’s discipline rules next spring to give more specific instructions for school districts on these new requirements.
This survey is one chance for you to share what YOU THINK the new rules should say.
You can weigh in on what you think would be “comparable” or “appropriate” services for a student who is suspended. Or what you think “culturally responsive” and “culturally sensitive” meetings between families and schools would look like.
Your survey responses will be compiled by the South King County Discipline Coalition and provided to OSPI to ensure that YOUR VOICE is HEARD as they get ready to rewrite the discipline rules for our state.
