Nurses are on the front lines of Healthcare Innovation.  They are the ones who most directly provide the care our communities need. And we know that nurses do not work alone, they collaborate creatively and lead teams to advance change every single day.

Now we have an opportunity to harness the power of nursing innovations and bring teams together to tackle some of the most pressing healthcare challenges of our time.  The Pennsylvania Action Coalition is creating its inaugural Nursing Innovation Corps, whereby teams of interprofessional innovators led by Registered Nurses (RNs) can come together to develop and implement their ideas for improving patient care in America.

Please find the application below. You will be asked to include a link to a YouTube video (60 to 90 seconds) describing an innovative solution to a healthcare problem with the potential to improve the quality of care for elderly patients.

Keep in mind:
  • The theme for this contest is healthcare safety and quality for the elderly.
  • Videos should address the following questions:
    • What is the issue your idea seeks to address?
    • How are you or could you be working with other professionals to address this issue?
    • How can your idea improve the quality and safety of healthcare for the elderly?
    • In what area of practice would you seek to implement your idea?
  • Submission teams must include a registered nurse (RN) in Pennsylvania (this includes Advanced Practice Nurses) as well as an individual who is not an RN.
  • Submissions will be judged on the following criteria:
    • (20%) identification of an important quality/safety issue impacting healthcare for the elderly
    • (30%) originality and vision of proposed solution
    • (20%) potential for successful implementation or scaling
    • (30%) alignment with IOM Recommendation #2.
  • Submissions must comply with Official Rules available here
  • The contest submission period begins at 10:00am ET on February 6 and ends at 11:59pm on April 14, 2017.
  • Winners will be announced in July 2017.
    • Cash prizes of $500 will be awarded to each team that is a finalist.
    • Finalists will also join the inaugural cohort of the Nursing Innovation Corps, a six to twelve month networking and mentorship program that will enable peer learning across healthcare settings; opportunities for testing, implementation, or scaling of the proposed practice innovation; and opportunities for further dissemination. Please note that prizes are subject to change.
