APPLICATION FORM - Certificate Programme in Nonprofit Leadership and Management Cycle 8 holding from April 15th to June 11th 2021
About the Course
The Nonprofit Leadership and Management Programme (NPLM) offers a transformative approach to leadership based on feminist perspectives that is urgently needed in West Africa today. On the one hand, leaders and managers of nonprofit organizations in the region daily confront complex global problems while, on the other hand, wrestling with deep organizational challenges. Leaders and managers of nonprofits are challenged by a lack of sustained access to financial resources, political support, skilled talent at both board and staff levels, and supportive infrastructure (such as access to affordable power, telecommunications, transport, security etc.). Taken together, these factors make it exceedingly difficult for leaders and managers of/in nonprofits to fulfil their leadership potential and organizational missions. Meanwhile, the broader global challenges these nonprofits are created to address in the region have become no less daunting – from unsustainable levels of economic and gender inequality (often manifesting in violence), environmental degradation, to critical gaps in the provision of quality education, healthcare and access to justice.
In this context, nonprofits must lead differently to not only ensure their organizational survival but also to make a positive change on the causes for which they have been established. Transformative leadership based on feminist leadership values and principles, therefore, offers hope and a potential for thinking differently about some of the world’s biggest challenges and how women and men activists enact leadership.
Against this backdrop, the programme provides a detailed introduction to the leadership and management of nonprofits through a highly practical, experiential and interactive series of online and in-class lectures by LBS faculty, guest lectures, case study discussions, and videos. It is a learner-centred programme which ensures participants are empowered to advance powerful innovative ideas into high-impact realities, and effectively apply feminist leadership principles and business management skills to their work in the social sector. The programme content and pedagogy centre on transformative feminist leadership principles such as inclusiveness, equality, systems change, the centrality of relationships and self-care. The course enables participants gain utilitarian skills to strengthen the management and funding structures unique to the nonprofit sector. Participants will gain immersive experiences in strategic marketing and communications planning for nonprofits, exploring current issues in policy, nonprofit law, corporate governance, people management, and financial management.
