Surgeon Survey: Evaluation of the Patient Safety Reporting System

Introduction to the Survey

Thank you for taking the time to participate in this survey, which should take about 5 to 10 minutes of your time. We are conducting a research study to understand the impact of hospital-based patient safety reporting systems on surgeons’ professional lives and on patient care.

As you know, these systems were originally established to provide a transparent, constructive platform for healthcare workers—particularly nurses—to report patient safety concerns and foster improvement. However, over time, some have perceived that the system’s intended purpose has been undermined. Reports may be overused, hospital administrations sometimes fail to properly assess complaints or concerns and take meaningful action, and, in some cases, this flawed process pressures surgeons to limit their practice and avoid more complex cases, ultimately harming patient care.

We want to learn how these developments affect the professional environment of surgeons, including impacts on patient care, burnout levels, and overall job satisfaction. Have these systems alleviated or intensified the pressures of surgical practice? Have they improved or compromised collaboration and patient outcomes? Your insights are crucial in helping us recommend practical strategies for hospitals to ensure that reporting systems are used appropriately and effectively—for the benefit of both patients and medical professionals.

We greatly appreciate your honest and thoughtful responses. Your participation is voluntary, and the information you provide will be kept strictly confidential and used only for the purposes of this study. Thank you again for your time and contribution.
