Fight ! -- Brandon Fajardo scored two goals in a span of 47 seconds in the second half to lead Notre Dame to a 3-1 win over Fairfield Prep in the 2025 SCC boys soccer championship game. It was the Green Knights’ second consecutive league crown. Mercy, Mercy, Mercy! -- Mercy cross country won the 2025 SCC Girls Cross Country title on October 15. It was the Tigers’ second straight league title. The Tigers went on to win the Class MM state title. Hornets Sting! -- The Branford field hockey wins the SCC and Class M titles in 2025. The Hornets, who finished a perfect 12-0 in league regular season play, defeated Cheshire, 1-0, in the SCC final before winning the state title with a 1-0 win over New Milford. In six postseason games, the Hornets allowed just two goals – recording six shutouts. Lions Roar! -- After reaching the semifinals of the SCC tournament for the first time, the Foran girls soccer team proceeds to win its first-ever state title, defeating heavily favored Northwest Catholic, 3-2, on November 15. The Lions allowed just two goals in the entire state tournament. Hand Gridders Reign Again -- After winning its second-straight SCC regular-season title, the Daniel Hand football team wins the Class SS state title with a 37-13 win over previously undefeated Killingly. The Tigers (12-1) reached the championship game after wins over Waterford (43-19) and Nonnewaug (42-0). Jesuits Go Low -- The Fairfield Prep boys golf wins the CIAC State fall golf title. The Jesuits finished at 7-over-par 291, seven strokes better than Darien, the FCIAC tournament champion, to claim its third straight state crown. X-Men Keep Running Fast -- After winning its 10th straight league title, the Xavier boys cross country proceeds to win its seventh straight Class MM state title before finishing second at the State Open meet on November 3 at Wickham Park. Xavier also qualified for the New England Championships for the ninth consecutive year - the longest active New England streak for any Connecticut boys cross country program. Remember the Titans -- Sheehan football won the Class S state football title with a 21-7 victory over Northwest Catholic on December 13. The Titans, who finished the regular-season with a 8-2 record, rolled to wins over North Branford (42-0) and Woodland Regional (41-20) on their way to the championship game. On the Mat -- Branford’s Ava Gambardella won her second straight CIAC girls wrestling state open title (114 lbs.), defeating league-rival Selena Batres (Jonathan Law) in the final match on February 28. Trojan Pucksters -- Led by its top line of JJ Laffin, Liam Laffin and George Porto, the Lyman Hall boys ice hockey won the Division II state title, defeating Conard, 5-2, on March 20. It was the Trojans’ first state title since 2019. Mr. 600 -- Mercy head girls basketball coach Tim Kohs won his 600th game on January 20, becoming the sixth CIAC coach to reach the milestone. Kohs, who doubles as Mercy’s athletic director, finished his 33rd season and holds a 612-210 (.745 pct.) career record. Twin Trouble -- Twin brothers Aaron and Ethan Rich were spectacular for Lyman Hall’s indoor track squad. At the State Open on February 21, Aaron set a meet record in the long jump at 24 feet, 4¼ inches while Ethan won the high jump at 6-8. Aaron claimed silver in the 300 (34.60), and each brother earned a bronze medal — Aaron in the high jump (6-6) and Ethan in the long jump (23-0¼). All told, the brothers recorded 40 points – just one behind eventual champion Bloomfield. And in the spring, both brothers were All-SCC standouts on the baseball diamond for the eventual Class L champions and #1 team in the state. 4-Sport Sarah -- Mercy senior Sarah Roberts excelled in four (yes, four) sports across three seasons – earning All-State honors in cross country, indoor track, ice hockey and outdoor track & field. In the fall, she won her third straight class title in cross country (Class MM, 18:47.1). During the winter, she captured the SCC, Class M, and State Open indoor track titles in the 1000 meters while earning All-State honors in ice hockey. In the spring, Roberts won the 800 meters at SCC, Class MM and State Open. Abdou, Abdou, Abdou -- The three-time SCC Boys Basketball Player of the Year and two-time Gatorade Connecticut Player of the Year, Notre Dame’s Abdou Toure averaged 24.6 points, 7.0 rebounds and 3.0 assists, leading the Green Knights to a fifth straight SCC championship. The five-star recruit finished with a school-record 1,981 career points and was named as the "Allen Iverson National High School Player of the Year." Prep Swims -- The Fairfield Prep boys swimming team captured its fifth consecutive SCC championship, and 22nd overall, with a meet record 1,628.5 points. The Jesuits would go on to win the Class L state title and finished as the runner-up at the State Open. 4-time Braylon -- Xavier senior Braylon Gonzalez (144 lbs.) became the fourth wrestler in SCC history to win four league titles, and he was the 17th wrestler in Connecticut to win three State Open titles. Falcons on the Mat -- Xavier wrestling won the SCC wrestling title for the ninth straight year, and added to its impressive trophy case with its sixth straight Class L state title, and its fifth straight State Open title. The Falcons then finished second at the annual New England meet to close out the campaign. Blue Devils Rejoice -- Four days after upsetting league-rival Notre Dame in the semifinals, West Haven defeated previously undefeated Staples, 79-72, in three overtimes in the Division I state boys basketball championship game at Mohegan Sun Arena. It was the Blue Devils’ first state title since 1987. Tigers Gymnastics -- The Daniel Hand gymnastics won its fifth straight SCC title -- 26th time in 30 years - and proceeded to capture the Class S state title for the fifth consecutive year. The Tigers have won 23 state titles – the most of any gymnastics program in the state of Connecticut. Green Dragons Win -- Hamden boys outdoor track & field team won its Class LL state title, winning by 0.5 points against Greenwich. It was the Green Dragons’ first state title since 1999. Ram Perfect -- Cheshire softball goes undefeated (27-0) with the Class LL state softball title behind seniors Jordan McCue and Jenica Matos. McCue’s eighth inning walk-off game-winning homer lifted the Rams to the SCC title on May 27, and Matos finished the season with 405 strikeouts and allowed just two earned runs in 179 innings. Lions Roar Again -- Behind senior pitcher Abby Corris, Foran softball won its second straight CIAC Class M state title, walloping Woodland Regional, 10-1, on June 13. Corris finished her scholastic career with more than 1,000 strikeouts. Grizzlies Win Again -- After winning the Class M state title last year, the Guilford boys lacrosse moves up to Class L and wins another state title, culminating with a convincing 9-2 win over FCIAC-member Fairfield Ludlowe. Shelton Spikers Perfection -- Shelton boys volleyball wins their first state title since 2005. The Gaels finish the 2026 season undefeated (23-0), winning the SCC and Class L state titles, also becoming the first league team to win a state championship in 14 seasons. Give them a Hand, again -- Daniel Hand boys outdoor track & field squad won its first SCC title since 2017, and proceeded to win its third straight Class MM state title. Grizzlies Hold Court -- The Guilford girls tennis team prevailed over East Lyme, 4-3, in the Class L state final on June 3. It was the third Class L title in the previous four years for the Grizzlies. Guilford also won its third straight SCC title in 2026. Crusader Tennis Love -- After finishing as the SCC runner-up to eventual Class L state champion Guilford, the Lauralton Hall tennis team successfully defended its Class S state title, defeating Holy Cross, 4-0. It was the fourth title overall for the Crusaders. It's All Academics -- After finishing as the SCC runner-up, the Hillhouse girls outdoor track & field squad captured its third straight state title (Class MM) and its sixth in the last eight seasons. First Title for Tigers -- After falling in the SCC finals two week earlier, the Daniel Hand girls lacrosse team earns a spot in the Class M final, and defeats SCC-rival Branford, 14-7, to win their first-ever state title. Falcons Fly Low: Xavier shot a league-record low score of 288 to win the 2026 SCC boys golf title. All five Falcon golfers shot +5 or better as the team won its seventh SCC title and their second in the last three years. Xavier would go on to win the Division I state title two weeks later. Trojan Diamond Success: Behind a strong senior class, the Lyman Hall baseball team repeated as Class L state champions and as the #1 team in the state’s final baseball rankings. The Trojans, whose only loss came to Fairfield Prep in the SCC championship game on May 27, allowed just five runs in five state tournament games. Prep Baseball Power -- Led by Gatorade Player of the Year Ryan Ventrelle and SCC Player of Year Vinny Lombardo, the Fairfield Prep baseball team went undefeated against SCC teams, including a 4-1 win over previously-undefeated (and eventual #1 team in the state) Lyman Hall on May 27 in the league championship game.
