Informed Consent Form

We invite you to participate in research exploring Perceived Characteristics of Effective Teachers that is being conducted by Dr. Julie Verette Lindenbaum and Dr. Alicia Harlow at Russell Sage College. Participation is voluntary and you may withdraw from the study at any time without penalty or loss of benefits. You must be at least 18 years old to participate.

Your interaction with professors will provide essential knowledge about effective teacher characteristics that enhance your learning and academic success. We are specifically interested in how your perceptions align with past research in psychology and communication. We are also interested in the interaction between effective teachers and students’ thought processes while learning.

If you agree to participate you will complete an online survey. First, you will provide non-identifying demographic information (such as your age and gender). Next, you will describe characteristics of effective teachers (as well as those characteristics that you value and those that contribute to your academic success) in written responses and rating scales. Finally, you will complete two scales on how you tend to approach problems and consider new information. You should finish the survey in under 30 minutes.

Due to the anonymous nature of the study and subject matter, we anticipate no risks by participating in this study. You may benefit by reflecting on interactions with professors who have contributed to your academic success. Your participation will provide feedback for instructors looking to improve their connections with students, and will increase knowledge in the psychology of teaching.

Responses you provide are completely anonymous, and will in no way be connected to you, your email address, your IP address, or through any other identifier. The anonymous response feature will be used on Survey Monkey. We will maintain data throughout the course of this research project until completion.

If you, as a participant, have any questions, concerns, or complaints about this study, please contact the Principal Investigators Dr. Julie Verette Lindenbaum at lindej2@sage.edu or Dr. Alicia Harlow at harloa2@sage.edu.
