INTO Questionnaire on Draft Primary Curriculum Framework

The National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NCCA) is reviewing and redeveloping the primary curriculum. A Draft Framework was published in February 2020 and can be viewed at the following link.

This framework will underpin curriculum developments over the next few years.

At the time of publication - twenty years ago - the Primary School Curriculum (1999) was a cutting-edge curriculum informed by a decade-long process of development and deliberation and has since been the focus of research, review and evaluation.

Since 1999, the primary curriculum has provided a strong foundation for teaching and learning. At INTO’s annual Education Conference in 2019 the theme of Curriculum was explored, reviewing strengths and weaknesses of the 1999 Curriculum and what changes should be considered in a revised curriculum. Among the curriculum’s many successes have been children’s enjoyment of learning and teachers’ increased use of active learning methodologies, as well as improved attainment levels in reading, mathematics, and science (evidenced in national and international assessments). However, challenges have also been well documented, such as curriculum overload, too little time, engaging and supporting every child as a learner, and the challenge of meaningful assessment and reporting.

As part of INTO’s consultation with members, we would like teachers to complete the following series of questions. The input of teachers cannot be underestimated as their contributions are based on real-life situations and lived experiences in a school context.
