2019 SDSU Writers' Conference Presenter Application

Dear Potential Speakers:

The 2019 SDSU Writers' Conference will be held Jan. 31–Feb. 2, 2019 at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel San Diego - Mission Valley.   The conference will be structured in 3 tracts: Publishing, Craft, and Career. Within publishing we will have Indy and Traditional tracts.

Our highly successful editor/agent appointments and networking will augment this educational conference where participants will have access to world-class presentations by industry professionals, such as you.

With this in mind, we are looking for a few specific things from presenters this year:

* Diversity:  We’d like to see speakers and proposals that represent the great big world we live in and all the voices across the spectrum.

* Depth:  We are specifically looking for proposals that go deeper than “How to write a mystery” [page-turner, romance, memoir, etc., etc.]. We are looking for presentations or workshops that are fresh and new, that offer an innovative approach.  An example would be a critical review of what makes a literary work exceptional (structure, theme, symbolism, ideology, etc).  In short, we are not looking for the glitzy “how-to” presentations.  We want participants to experience thought provoking concepts that they haven’t heard at every other conference.  This is not to say that we won’t consider “how to write a page turner.”  We will, but if you’ve offered the same presentation at other conferences, please review it with a discerning eye for originality, relevance, and depth before submitting.

* Inspiration:  We want our participants to feel inspired after they leave a workshop: inspired to step out of their comfort zones and write for more than a commercial audience; inspired to bring new elements into their works; inspired to dig deeper and write that Pulitzer prize winning manuscript.

The audience for the SDSU Writers Conference consists of writers of all genres from fiction to nonfiction to children’s books. Self-help and/or motivational presentations for writers, genre specific, and multi-genre presentations are welcome.  The focus is on books as opposed to newspapers, magazines, blogging or journalism in general, unless the presentation is applied specifically to books.  Our screenplay audience is small but presentations that can apply to both screenplays and novels are also welcome.

Please note:  All presenters must register for the conference at a reduced conference fee and cover their own travel expenses for the conference. Presenters will have access to all conference features including the faculty only dinner.

Please complete this form to indicate you are interested in being a part of the conference. Expect to hear in Summer 2018 if you have been selected for the conference.
