Introduction

Dear participant,

Artificial Intelligence (AI)
is already part of inspections, investigations, prosecutions, and judgments — often invisibly.

This survey is conducted under the framework of the ARTIC Project (IMPEL 2025–27) and aims to map existing and emerging or proposed uses of Artificial Intelligence in Environmental Compliance Assurance (ECA) and related support activities.

This survey also aims to highlight how the use of AI is conditioned by or is able to condition the organizational and regulatory framework in which Environmental Authorities and other relevant subject operate.

The survey is aimed at actors likewise inspectors, police bodies tackling environmental crime, environmental prosecutors and judges, voluntarily gathered in the European Union, respectively in IMPEL, EnviCrimeNet, ENPE, and EUFJE.

However, given the global expansion of, and growing interest in, the topic, the survey remains open to collecting experiences and ideas from organizations operating in the ECA field in other regions of the world as well.

The participation of other relevant parties, such as universities and study and research centers, companies, service providers, is also welcome, without territorial limitations.

The questionnaire can be completed by subjects with different roles in organizations: individual responses are accepted, based on personal experience, or with input from colleagues in a specific unit, or providing an organisation-level perspective

You don't need to be an AI expert to complete the questionnaire. Your input is highly valuable and the results will help identify current practices, challenges, and opportunities and strengthen collaboration and knowledge exchange across our networks. Findings will be analyzed and included in a report to be shared with all participants.

Questionnaire Structure
This questionnaire has six sections:
  1. Respondent & Institutional Background
  2. Governance Context & Staff Support
  3. AI Products in Third-Party Materials
  4. Use of General-Purpose AI Tools
  5. Specific AI Solutions (already in use or to be soon implemented)
  6. Future AI Needs and Challenges
Participation Details
Please complete the questionnaire to the best of your knowledge.
At the beginning of the questionnaire, you will be asked to indicate how this response has been prepared (e.g., based on your own experience, with input from colleagues in a specific unit, or providing an organisation-level perspective). This information is used only to help interpret the results and understand the context of responses. Responses are not in any way binding for you, any collaborating colleagues, or your organisation.
  • Individual responses are highly valuable. They capture concrete practices, challenges, and day-to-day experience that may not be visible at organisational or management level.
  • Multiple responses per organisation are welcome. You may respond on your own, contribute with input from colleagues in a specific unit or function, or provide a broader organisational perspective where appropriate.
  • Responses reflecting a wider organisational or management perspective are also welcome, as they may highlight strategic priorities, governance approaches, or planned investments.
  • The level of perspective (individual, unit-level, or organisation-level) will be taken into account during analysis, but all responses carry equal, although proportionate, importance.
  • If a question is difficult to answer, you may skip it or select “Don’t know”. Partial responses remain very valuable.
The questionnaire can be completed over multiple sessions, page by page. Your responses are saved and submitted when you click the Next or Done button on each page. You may revise your answers on any page until you finish or exit the survey. At the end, you'll have the option to request a copy of your responses.

Deadline for responses: The survey is intended to remain open for an extended period; however, the information received will be processed at predetermined intervals.
The next date for the review of the data received is 31 May 2026.
