Within the KONO District, we’ve implemented a network of surveillance cameras that has already made a meaningful impact on community safety and security. This system has proven its value, including playing a key role in the identification and capture of seven homicide suspects. These outcomes reflect our ongoing commitment to using technology and strong community partnerships to create a safer environment for residents, businesses, and visitors.
Building on this progress, we are exploring opportunities to expand and strengthen this network through collaboration with local businesses. The Merchant Safety + Crime Experience Survey, conducted in fall 2023, marked an important step in understanding how criminal activity affects Oakland businesses. The survey gathered critical data to support a comprehensive analysis and ensure that business concerns are heard and addressed effectively.
This next survey builds on those insights by collecting feedback on the current camera system and gauging interest in integrating privately owned cameras into a broader, community-driven safety network.
In conclusion, the KONO Security Camera Program has demonstrably exceeded its initial objectives, contributing to a safer and more vibrant commercial hub in the KONO district. The data indicates a nearly 40% reduction in crime over two years (2022-2024), outpacing the City of Oakland, and a significant increase in sales tax revenue, correlating with the program's implementation.
