Expansion & Renovation Survey |
The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts has begun its $190 million expansion and renovation project with the international architecture firm SmithGroup. Tentatively scheduled to be completed in 2026, the project consists of adding a new wing of nearly 170,000 sq. ft. and renovating approximately 45,000 sq. ft. of existing spaces, while maintaining about four acres of green space in the museum’s Robins Sculpture Garden. The new wing will house contemporary art, African art, American art, a new suite of galleries for rotating special exhibitions, and a special-events space. The expansion and renovation will enable us to share more art, welcome more visitors, and provide more enjoyment on a seamless journey through the museum’s collections. In keeping with the museum’s Strategic Plan, this expansion and renovation project is, at its core, an expansion of storytelling. And we want you to see your reflection in VMFA—in the art, in the space, and in the planning. Be part of the progress as we begin this next exciting chapter in VMFA history. Your responses to this survey and your continued participation will help guide the design team as the project progresses.
