Complicated Bereavement and Grief Therapy

Each year during the week of its annual conference, ADEC delivers three professional development courses that provide an in-depth look at the topics and issues of greatest importance in grief and bereavement. Each of the courses is taught by the same instructor for three consecutive years. At this time, ADEC invites applications from individuals who wish to teach the Advanced Course: Complicated Bereavement and Grief Therapy for the years of 2019 - 2021.

Years to be Taught:
  • 2019 (April 9 & 10)
  • 2020 (April 28 & 29)
  • 2021 (Dates TBD)

Intended Audience: Psychologists, social workers, marriage and family therapists, licensed professional counselors, nurses, physicians, pastoral counselors, or anyone with professional training seeking advanced skill development in bereavement intervention with challenging cases.

Course Description:
A significant percentage of individuals who experience the death of a loved one struggle with prolonged and debilitating grief that merits professional intervention. The goal of this course is to draw on contemporary models and research findings that help distinguish between benign (or resilient patterns of grieving) and those that are more complicated, traumatic, prolonged or entail greater risk to the bereaved person’s psychosocial adaptation, health and interpersonal relationships. The course will acquaint participants with specific conceptual and practical tools for evaluating and intervening in such complications.
