Thank you for applying to the National Behavioral Health Network for Tobacco and Cancer Control's "CARE ECHO Series."

Tobacco use is one of the leading factors driving cancer disparities, contributing to a greater cancer burden and a unique set of challenges and circumstances across the cancer care continuum, especially for those with mental wellbeing and substance use considerations. Despite an overall decline in tobacco use over the last several decades, it remains the cause of 30% of all cancer deaths and 20% of all deaths in the United States. Racial/ethnic minority and low-income communities in particular are impacted by greater levels of discrimination and stress, which is also associated with higher cancer and tobacco smoking rates.

In this ECHO Series, participants will learn how to address psychosocial considerations in mental health and substance use populations across the cancer care continuum. The Series will cover tobacco related cancer screening and assessment, access to cancer care, survivorship and thrivership. Participants will focus on creating opportunities for mental wellbeing via collaborative cancer care and shared decision-making. Participants joining this ECHO will be able to:
  • Identify tobacco and cancer-related disparities for individuals with mental health and/or substance use disorders (MH/SUDs).
  • Learn strategies to implement psychosocial considerations throughout the cancer care continuum.
  • Explore opportunities to improve health outcomes for individuals with co-occurring tobacco use, cancer and mental wellbeing challenges.
