School Calendar Survey for 2027-28 and 2028-29

Coweta County School System

The Coweta County Board of Education is preparing to adopt new academic-year calendars for the 2027-28 and 2028-29 school years. Proposed calendars can be found here, and in the links below. This link opens a new page, where two calendar options can be found. Scroll down each calendar page to see both years under each option.

The Coweta County Board of Education intends to use this survey to adopt school calendars for the next two years, in order to provide families with the ability to schedule vacation plans. This survey allows participants to express their thoughts about school calendars, and also asks specific questions about the school system's traditional holiday schedule and the length of school breaks.

Both proposed calendars maintain 180 days of student instruction, divided into two 90-day semesters, (or as close to 90 as possible). The first semester must conclude before the start of holidays in December to allow for high school course completion and final exams prior to the Christmas and New Year's break. The calendars here also follow the long-time convention of not beginning the school year prior to August, and concluding the school year on the Friday before Memorial Day.

In addition to the above, the calendars also include:

A Labor Day holiday (a Monday holiday)
An October holiday (a long weekend, including a teacher workday following the first nine weeks)
A Thanksgiving holiday (full week, or as shorter version)
A Christmas and New Year's holiday (two weeks)
A Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. holiday
A Mid-winter break in February (full week)
A Spring holiday in April (full week)
School-year end before Memorial Day

Two Teacher Work Days in March can also serve as possible inclement weather days in case of school closures that require student make-ups.

The first calendar option is similar to the current school calendar. The second option differs by shortening Thanksgiving or Christmas and New Year's breaks slightly, to start later in August:

Option 1 – Closely follows the calendar used by the school system in recent years. A full week Thanksgiving Break, a Christmas and New Year's Break of two weeks, and a full week Winter Break, and a full-week Spring Break is scheduled. School starts Thursday, August 4 in 2027.

Option 2 – Differs by shortening first semester breaks (Thanksgiving week to two days in 2027, the Christmas and New Year break in 2028). School starts August 9 in 2027.

Take the short survey below to provide the school board with your preferences on these options and your thoughts on school calendars…
1.Do you prefer, or not prefer, Calendar Option 1 (with current holiday breaks, including full-week Thanksgiving and Christmas/New Year's breaks, and a 2027 school-year start on August 4)?
2.Do you prefer, or not prefer, Calendar Option 2 (with current holiday breaks, but with shorter Thanksgiving or Christmas/New Year's breaks) and a 2027 school-year start on August 9?
3.The school system currently schedules a two-day fall break (four-day weekend) for students in October, by scheduling a break day on the Monday after a teacher workday (this break is tied to the end of the first nine weeks of the school year, and not necessarily to the federal Columbus Day holiday). How important is it to you to maintain this fall-season break?
4.The school system currently schedules a full-week break for Thanksgiving. How important is it to you to maintain a full-week break (five school days) at Thanksgiving?
5.The school system currently schedules a long (generally two-week) Christmas and New Year's Break in December. How important is it to you to maintain this full two-week break?
6.The school system currently schedules a full-week break in late February (usually around the week of President's Day) as a mid-winter break. How important is it to you to maintain a full-week break (five school days)?
7.The school system currently schedules a full-week break on the first full week of April as our Spring break. How important is it to you to maintain this full-week break (five school days)?
