Using the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS), learners with little or no form of communication will be taught to communicate using a picture card. The learner will be taught to attend to a communication partner and give them the picture of a desired item or activity. The focus of these sessions will be on Phase I: The Exchange with a blank card (and then potential a picture card) where the learner will learn to pick up, reach and give it to the communication partner to gain access to a desired item or activity.

A picture exchange system is a researched based method designed to introduce a leaner to early functional communication skills. PECS teaches learners how to engage in an effective communication exchange and how to efficiently request preferred items or activities. The communication partner is always modeling appropriate language for each request, therefore the learner is constantly exposed to the vocal language corresponding to what they want or need.
