Role Description, Skills and Abilities

This role is:
  • making museum visitors feel welcome during their visit to the Australian Museum
  • helping visitors orient themselves, facilitate discovery and discussion while learning about Australia's natural history and cultural heritage in accordance with the Museum's Vision and Mission available here
In this role you will:
  • meet and greet visitors in the public areas of the Australian Museum
  • study, interpret and explain the Australian Museum’s history, collections, scientific research, ongoing and temporary exhibitions and displays and public programs to visitors
  • engage with visitors using objects and specimens available in themed ‘Talking Point Tables’
  • once experienced, take visitors on free Highlight tours
  • assist school groups and help with Cloaking in busy periods
Commitment:
  • Induction Day: Thursday July 13
  • Initial Training Program (weekdays): one day a week on Monday, Tuesday or Friday in July and August
  • Ongoing: one day a week on your chosen day of the week (Saturday, Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Friday currently available)
  • 4-5 hours per day between 9.30am - 2.00pm
  • requires an ongoing commitment for a minimum of 12 months
The skills required are:
  • excellent communication skills
  • ability to communicate to visitors from a very wide range of age, cultural and political views and abilities
  • willing to be independent but also be flexible in a team helping visitors, staff and other volunteers
  • be prepared to be continuously learning new skills
  • have enthusiasm and interest in Natural History and First Nations cultures and support scientific evidence based interpretations
What happens next?
  • your application will be assessed by staff
  • if your application is shortlisted you will be invited to an online interview
  • if accepted you will be expected to attend the compulsory Induction Day, July 13 and a regular weekday in July and August for your Initial Training Program. 
  • NOTE: we only take a small number of new volunteers at one time as this program involves intensive training
  • your application may not be successful as this program is often oversubscribed
