As Bermuda’s workforce and population both mature, the voices and contributions of older workers are increasingly important. While many people may plan for traditional retirement at age 65, changing norms in health, longevity, and economic need mean that many older adults are continuing to work, want to work, or could contribute more, if given fair opportunity.

Yet current laws in Bermuda do not explicitly protect older workers from age-based discrimination in the workplace. The Human Rights Act 1981 does not include age as a protected characteristic for employment.

Also, although there is no legal mandatory retirement age for most private-sector employees, employers often use policies that retire people at age 65 or expect retirement by then. For public officers, a retirement age of 68 applies.

Demographically, older adults (those aged 65+) make up a growing share of Bermuda’s population. The old age dependency ratio-that is, the number of seniors compared to the working-age population-is projected to rise significantly, which heightens the importance of retaining qualified older workers.

Why we’re doing this survey:
We want to assess current policies, practices, and attitudes toward older workers—both in private and public sectors—to better understand what supports might be needed to ensure fair inclusion, openness to employing or retaining older staff, and developing policies that match the needs of all age groups.

What this survey hopes to achieve:
  • Identify existing barriers & practices that might disadvantage or discourage older workers.
  • Gauge awareness, policies, and attitudes around age inclusion, retirement norms, accommodations, and more.
  • Gather input to guide possible changes—whether legislative, organizational, or cultural—to better support an inclusive, age-equitable workforce.
Thank you for your time. Your insights will help shape initiatives aimed at strengthening workforce equity for people as they age. As a thank-you for completing this survey, providing your contact and demographic information will also enter you into a draw to win a $50 Lindo’s grocery voucher.

The survey should take less than 10 minutes to complete.
