* 1. How many stories are in your home?
Basements are considered a storey, ½ stories are considered a storey.

* 2. How many smoke alarms do you have in your home?
Smoke alarms are usually found on the ceilings throughout your house. There should be one on each storey and one outside of all sleeping/ bedroom areas. Therefore, if you have a 2-storey home (basement and main floor), you should have 3 smoke alarms in your home.

* 3. Do you have Carbon Monoxide (CO) alarms?
If your home has a fuel burning appliance, fireplace or attached garage a CO alarm is required outside all sleeping areas. Therefore if you have a 2-storey home with a sleeping area in the basement and a sleeping area on the main floor, you will require 2 CO alarms.

* 4. Have any of your smoke/ carbon monoxide alarms expired?
Did you know that smoke and carbon monoxide alarms expire? Check the device for an expiry date, if none, the alarm must be replaced after 10 years of use. Please replace with the same type of alarm ( battery or hard-wired)

* 5. Do you have the Combo smoke/ carbon monoxide alarm?
Newer style alarms are available in smoke/carbon monoxide combination units in various styles.

* 6. Do you regularly maintain your smoke or carbon monoxide alarms?
Smoke and carbon monoxide alarms should be tested monthly and vacuumed for dust buildup routinely.
