There are numerous well-known potential negative impacts of the use of personal mobile devices (mobile phones, tablets etc.) at school, including on learning, socialisation, mental health and physical activity. For this reason, a number of Australian states have banned mobile devices in government schools (including Victoria, Western Australia, New South Wales [primary only]).

The NT Department of Education requires NT schools, in conjunction with their school councils, to develop their own policies and guidelines governing the use of personal mobile devices. Hence, the Nightcliff Middle School Council will be working to develop a more comprehensive policy for NMS. The school council intends to trial a new approach to student use of personal mobile devices in Term 4, and is asking for your help in identifying any concerns that a new policy will need to address.

The new policy would mean that students who bring a mobile device to school must ensure that it is switched off and stored securely during the school day, including at recess and lunchtime. Teachers would be able to allow mobile devices in class if they are needed for particular lessons or activities. Parents would need to meet with the school to develop a personalised plan if they consider that a student has special circumstances that need to be accommodated.

It is hoped that the change would result in:
  • better learning with fewer distractions in class time;
  • more social interaction among students at recess and lunchtime;
  • less potential for unsupervised, inappropriate and unsafe device use during school hours;
  • better mental health outcomes for students; and
  • a more vibrant school community.
