Algorithms have a long history, and the word can be traced back to the 9th century. A simple example of an algorithm would be one which calculates the area of a circle. The input is the radius of the circle. The algorithm calls for multiplying the radius squared times pi. The output of the algorithm is the area of the circle. Another example could be a cooking recipe where the ingredients are the input and a meal is the output. A more sophisticated algorithm, such as used by IBM’s Watson artificial intelligence, can literally affect human lives. The inputs could include the patient’s electronic health record, symptoms, medications, and genetic markers. The outputs of the algorithm could be a diagnosis and recommendations for what treatment would be most effective. Algorithm Attitude will explain the problem-solving capabilities of algorithms in layperson terms including how they work and how they can make our lives better. It also explains the dark side of algorithms and how to protect against future catastrophe.

Hobby Attitude: How hobbies can improve our business and personal lives

A hobby is an activity, interest, or pastime which people undertake during their own time for pleasure or relaxation. Wikipedia breaks hobbies into four areas: general hobbies, collection hobbies, competitive hobbies, and observational hobbies. In each category, the lists are further divided into indoors and outdoors. The total list includes more than 400 hobbies.
Hobby Attitude will explore how hobbies can provide more than pleasure or relaxation and have a positive impact on both our personal and professional lives. I have experienced this in more than a dozen hobbies over the years. In the book, I will share how I got into the hobbies, what challenges they presented, and how I learned from them. All of the Attitude Series books contain personal experiences. Hobby Attitude will go broader and deeper.
