Opioids are a class of drugs that include the illegal drug heroin, synthetic opioids such as fentanyl, and pain relievers available legally by prescription, such as oxycodone (OxyContin®), hydrocodone (Vicodin®), codeine, morphine, and many others. The misuse of and addiction to opioids is a serious national crisis.

Minnesota was recently part of a $26 billion multistate winning lawsuit against multiple opioid pharmaceutical companies and an opioid manufacturer. It has been determined that this settlement money will be divided between states, counties and cities over the next several years.

An expert panel, selected by the Attorney General’s Office, created categories of the best and most effective ways to use the settlement money. The categories include how to help people affected by opioids get the help/resources they need or provide education to help reduce opioid addictions in the future. It is our goal to reduce opioid-related deaths and overdoses among our residents. Ramsey County would like your help to determine what categories should be prioritized and how resources could be used over time.
