* 1. Are you aware that a group called BYO Greenwich is trying to pass a new law in town that prohibits retailers from giving you a plastic bag  and forces them to charge you a .25 cent for a paper bag - the highest in the county?

* 2. Are you aware that the law specifies exactly what kind of paper bag is acceptable, any other kind would be a violation?
A paper bag must:
- contain no old growth fiber
- have minimum 40% recycled content
- be 100% recyclable
- have printed on the outside "reusable" and "recyclable"
- have printed on it the name and location of the bag manufacturer
- have printed on it the % of recycled content

* 3. Are you aware that if a retailer is in violation -- ie. they offered you a plastic bag or a paper bag that doesn't meet the law's specifications -- then, the business can be fined $250 for 1st offense, then $500 for 2nd offense, and they have 15 days to comply before the fine will double?

* 4. Did you know that this law actually covers more than just retailers, but any person, business, or non-profit, including department stores, pharmacies, restaurants, hospitals, libraries, schools, farmers markets, street fairs, and town events can be found in violation?

* 5. Are you aware this law includes specification of what kind of reusable bags BYO deems acceptable and wants you to use:
- can be cleaned and disinfected
- does not contain lead, cadmium, other toxic materials that post a threat to public health
- must carry a minimum of 22 lbs, over 125 uses, and cover a distance of at least 175 ft.

* 6. If this law is enacted and one day you forgot your shopping bags, do you see yourself going outside of Greenwich to shop or deciding not to shop that day?

* 8. The RTM will be voting on this proposed law on Monday, March 12th at 8PM at the auditorium at Central Middle School.  The meeting is open to the public. This vote will determine if it will be enacted, put on hold, or rejected.  Will you be contacting your RTM members to express your opinion on this proposed law?
