Scottish Terrier Bladder & Liver Screening - Registration of Interest

Research has shown that Scottish Terriers have some increased risk of bladder cancer (transitional cell carcinoma or TCC) compared to other breeds, particularly in dogs that have been exposed to chemicals such as lawn herbicides and cigarette smoke. Elevated liver enzymes and liver pathologies are highly complex and, in Scottish Terriers, elevated liver enzymes can occur in the absence of serious pathologies. This can result in misdiagnosis, dogs being subjected to unnecessary and invasive testing and new liver pathologies getting missed in dogs with a long history of benign elevated liver enzymes.

Most Scottish Terriers live long, healthy lives without ever going on to develop liver or bladder problems. However, when they do arise, early detection is key for the best possible treatment outcomes. Ultrasound scanning has been found to be the most effective diagnostic tool for early detection. In collaboration with the head researcher for the Scottish Terrier Longitudinal Health Study and the Willows Veterinary Centre, we are hoping to start offering annual screening days for Scottish Terriers. The current cost of an abdominal ultrasound is around £360 which presents a barrier to regular screening. If there is sufficient interest, the Willows has agreed to offer these screening days at a reduced cost but the final cost per dog will depend on the number of dogs attending the screening day.

Screening will be open to healthy Scottish Terriers aged 5 and up and of suitable temperament to be able to have an ultrasound scan without sedation. The screening days are NOT suitable for dogs with pre-existing bladder or liver pathologies, dogs with known conditions should remain under the care of their regular vet or specialist. Findings of the screening will be strictly confidential between the radiographer and the owner. Findings of the scan will not be disclosed to the Breed Health Coordinator or used for any research projects without owner consent.

Screening days would be offered in the morning on Tuesday or Wednesday at the Willows Veterinary Centre & Referral Service, Highlands Rd, Shirley, Solihull B90 4NH. Interested owners should be available to attend these days and times at this location. Once we have a sufficient number of dogs registered, I will contact everyone who has responded to this survey with further details on the screening day and a confirmation of cost. By submitting this form you consent to being contacted further regarding the screening day. Your contact details will not be disclosed to third parties or used for any other purpose. You can withdraw your consent to be contacted at any time by using the contact details below.
