In order to be recognized at the national level, the principal must meet the following criteria:

* Must have 5 years experience as a principal to be eligible for the national award at the elementary level.

* Must not be NAESP state representative or Zone 9 Director.

* Must have served as a principal at one or more middle level or high schools for three or more consecutive school years to be eligible for the national award at the secondary level.
