Taigh Chearsabhagh Creative Hub

Updated Needs Case

A needs case and feasibility study for a Creative Hub project at Taigh Chearsabhagh was undertaken in 2021-22 as part of the development of a business case for the project. This work included an analysis of the demand for studio space and other facilities, which was based on two workshop sessions with creative practitioners (undertaken online whilst Covid restrictions were in place), as well as findings from two islands-wide online surveys.

Work is currently ongoing to update this assessment so that progress can be made on realising the proposed development and securing the necessary funding. To support this, an updated reflection of current demand is required.

Following recent workshops with creative practitioners, this survey is intended to gather views from the wider creative practitioners’ community and determine the extent of current demand. It focuses on the demand and requirements for solo studio space, shared/flexible studio space, other facilities, and potential costs. The outputs of this survey will inform the updated needs case for the project.
1.Do you think there is a need for additional studio space on the island?
2.What type of space would be of interest to you? (Please tick all that apply)
3.In terms of solo studio space, how long would you expect to rent the space for?
4.What features would you ideally like to have as part of the solo studio space?
5.In terms of shared studio space, how often would you expect to use the space?
6.What features would you ideally like to have as part of the shared studio space? (Please select all that apply)
7.If you were required to pay a membership fee in order to use the shared studio space, would you do so?
8.The previous feasibility assessment explored the possibility of the shared space being made available to rent for exclusive use by creative practitioners or groups, such as for events. Would you want the option to book the space for exclusive use?
9.How often would you expect to use the shared space for exclusive use, e.g. for performances, events, or group workshops?
10.What other types of facilities do you think should be part of the creative hub? (Please tick all that apply)
11.Do you think the additional facilities would work alongside what is already at Taigh Chearsabhagh?
12.Do you think it would be necessary to have a Studio Manager? They would be responsible for delivering membership and rental contracts, ensuring spaces and tidy and functional, give equipment inductions, and facilitate a harmonious working culture.
13.The previous feasibility study also included a financial feasibility assessment. This included key assumptions on potential costs.

In terms of the solo studio space, does a cost of £25 per week seem:
14.In terms of membership fees for access to the shared studio space, does £150 per year seem:
15.For rental of additional space and facilities, does £50 per day seem:
16.If you answered 'too high' or 'too low' to any of the previous three questions, please provide further information on which costs should be adjusted.
17.Thank you for completing the survey - do you have any other comments or questions to raise?
