Are you ready? Here we go!

Seventeen-year-old Saraid of Thekla knew that one day she’d be sent away to marry the ruler of a far-away land—it’s just what happens to princesses. Now that day has come: her trunks are packed and she’s said good-bye to everyone she’s ever known, but she’s not worried. After all, she has The Book.

The Book is a 300-year-old treatise on the art of kingship that she’s more or less memorized. With its help she’s sure she’s made herself the ideal queen for her adopted country, and once her new husband sees that, he’ll fall madly in love with her. It will all be perfect. She’s sure of it.

But while crossing the desert wasteland that lies between her old and new homes Saraid is captured by a local warlord, an enigmatic young man with laughing blue eyes who can cap all her quotations from The Book, much to her annoyance. Even more annoying is that Cadel is determined to keep her from completing her journey: he’ll send her home rather than let her go to Mauburni and marry the Lord Protector. A few unsuccessful escape attempts later, Saraid begins to piece together what’s really going on both with Cadel and her husband-to-be, and she’ll need a lot more than The Book to navigate the intricacies and treacheries of politics and power, of duty and justice…and of love.
