In partnership with Friends of Alta and the Alta Environmental Center, Tracy Aviary staff and volunteers (citizen scientists) monitor nesting activity in 20 songbird boxes and 20 owl boxes in different habitat types throughout Alta.
When? Thursday and Saturday afternoons between June and September.
How? Volunteers sign up according to their availability. On the day of a nest box check, volunteers are split into groups of 2-3 people. A staff member leads each group to visit the nest boxes. Previous training in nest box surveys and bird identification is not required.
Fun perk: Learn how to snowshoe! Because there is still snow, we snowshoe to the boxes. Tracy Aviary has four snowshoes that can be borrowed to volunteers. Snowshoeing will happen until the snow melts. At that point, we will hike to the boxes instead.
