This course will help you understand and explore
the general landscape of social entrepreneurship,
startup considerations and the basics of setting up a social enterprise, and
best practices and frameworks in managing and operating established social enterprises.
The course will start with a discussion around the landscape of social enterprise, from the forms to the types, ranging from the pure non-profit to those that are primarily social businesses, to help you understand and navigate the choices available to you in context of both startup and employment.

We will then explore the basics of setting up a social venture including the parallels between social and commercial companies and the key questions you should be asking to help flesh out and imagine your project in detail (from solution/project design to effectiveness and efficiency, costing and budgeting and longer term sustainability). We’ll explore an end to end framework for solution design that will lead you from an understanding of the problem and vision all the way through to long term roadmaps and short term project planning. Finally, we will explore best practices in managing established impact projects and organisations, including leveraging leadership, project management, organisational design, agile planning, social business models, curating and building culture, hiring and mobilising teams, and finally a brief insight into scaling while maintaining quality of impact. The goal is to help you prepare for what’s coming your way if you’re thinking of starting a social venture, or alternatively understand how and where you can add value if you join an established non-profit or social business.

By the end, you will learn what it means to operate a highly effective social enterprise and feel confident in your ability to build one yourself, should you choose to.
