The number of insurance companies who insure firearm ranges is very limited. Our current Insurer is Berkshire Hathaway. Berkshire Hathaway is managed by Warren Buffet, who is also a board member of Everytown for Gun Safety. Everytown for Gun Safety is an non-profit organization that seeks to ban standard capacity magazines, various rifles and semi-automatic pistols as well as impose insurance requirements for owning firearms and mandatory background checks whenever firearms are transfered between individuals.
Berkshire Hathaway Insurance has imposed an age restriction on our club, prohibiting individuals under 12 years old from shooting firearms at our facility. We have requested clarification if this restriction includes other non-shooting related activities (pellet guns, archery etc...) and have not gotten a response at this time. Additionally they have instituted a requirement that fully automatic firearms (machine guns) cannot be used here unless tethered to the shooting bench. Since we do not currently have a means to do this, this requirment has resulted in a ban on fully automatic firearms. Berkshire Hathaway also insures firearm dealers and has imposed age restrictions on firearm sales, prohibiting sales of rifles to individuals under the age of 21.
Our current annual insurance policy with Berkshire Hathaway is $4,012.
We contacted another insurance company named Lockton Affinity to get a quote from them. The price of our policy with them would be $4,983 per year and would require us to increase dues by $5.00 for 2024. The policy with Lockton Affinity would not have limitations on the use of firearms nor on the age that parents could begin teaching their children how to safely use a firearm.
The third option is to purchase insurance through the NRA. This would only be available is we became an NRA Affiliate Club which would require us to have all of our members be NRA members. We would have the option of providing discounted annual NRA memberships for $10 per person per year. Currently less then 20% of our membership has reported belonging to the NRA. Policies through the NRA are more then Berkshire Hathaway so this option may still result in an increase in annual dues for 2024. Unfortunately we cannot get a policy quote without first becoming an NRA Affiliate Club. Becoming an NRA affiliate club would also give us access to NRA range Development and Youth Sporting grants.
