Movie Survey 2

We've received so much positive feedback on holding movie nights here in The Back Room at The Mill we've decided to go forth with the idea! Now we need your help to decide which movies we will be showing. Movies will be shown on the following Thursdays of August 18th, 25th, and September 1st. The showing will be held at 7.30pm with a ticket price of $5.00 except the American Classics category. On those nights there will be no charge. If we show either My Man Godfrey or Hi Diddle Diddle, there will be a discussion after the movie for anyone interested. Below are your favorite categories from our previous survey. Please select the movie from each category that you will come see in The Back Room.

Singin In The Rain, Rated G. "Gene Kelly, Debbie Reynolds and Donald O'Connor combine their talents in one of the greatest big-screen musicals ever made, a two-time Oscar nominee that includes the songs "Good Morning," "Make 'Em Laugh" and the iconic title tune. When Hollywood attempts the transition from silent films to talkies, a matinee idol (Kelly) hopes to make the cut. But he's hampered by a silent-movie queen (Jean Hagen) with a voice like fingernails on a blackboard."

Casablanca, Rated PG. "In this Oscar-winning classic, American expat Rick Blaine (Humphrey Bogart) plays host to gamblers, thieves and refugees at his Moroccan nightclub during World War II ... but he never expected Ilsa (Ingrid Bergman) - the woman who broke his heart -- to walk through that door. Ilsa hopes that with Rick's help, she and her fugitive husband (Paul Henreid) can escape to America. But the spark that brought the lovers together still burns brightly."

Cool Hand Luke, NR. ""What we have here is a failure to communicate." Luke Jackson (Paul Newman) is a man who likes to do things his own way, which leads to a world of hurt when he ends up in a Southern prison camp -- and on the wrong side of its warden (Strother Martin). George Kennedy copped an Oscar as a fellow prisoner who tries to break Luke and later comes to revere him. The cast also includes a young Dennis Hopper, Harry Dean Stanton and Joe Don Baker. "

My Fair Lady, Rated G. "In this classic cinematic version of the Broadway smash, Audrey Hepburn is at her most radiant as Eliza Doolittle, the Cockney flower girl transformed into a poised duchess by Professor Henry Higgins (Rex Harrison, reprising his Broadway role). The restored and remastered special edition includes an audio commentary with crew members and Doolittle's singing voice, Marni Nixon. The film won eight Academy Awards, including Best Picture."

* 2. American Classics - No Admission Charge

My Man Godfrey, NR: "One of the great "screwball comedies" that owe their existence to the horrific life lived by so many Americans during the Great Depresson. Escapist movies were made to offer a couple of hours of relief from the worry, hunger, and despair of the outside world." *There will be a discussion after the movie for anyone who is interested.

Road to Bali : "The best of the "Road to" movies, and the only one in Color. Hilarious example of early Post-Modernism. In other words, a movie that knows it's a movie and doesn't take itself seriously. Full of hilarious jokes, fun musical numbers, and great ad-libbing by Bing Crosby & Bob Hope."

Hi Diddle Diddle: "This has everything you expect and love in a musical (not really a musical, just has some singing it) screwball comedy/romance, including a challenge to find the movie's purpose in the opening credits. This is in fact an interesting and rare propoganda movie at a time when not everyone agreed with America entering WWII and thought of it as government meddling." *There will be a discussion after the movie for anyone who is interested.

* 3. Independent:

It's Kind of a Funny Story, Rated PG13. "Being a teenager is too much for 16-year-old Craig (Keir Gilchrist), who shocks his parents (Lauren Graham and Jim Gaffigan) by checking himself into a mental health clinic for a little R & R. But when the youth ward is unexpectedly closed, he's forced to live among the adult patients. Zach Galifianakis, Viola Davis, Emma Roberts and Aasif Mandvi co-star in this quirky drama written and directed by the screenwriters of Half Nelson."

Outsourced, Rated PG13. "When his department is outsourced to India, customer call center manager Todd Anderson (Josh Hamilton) heads to Mumbai to train his successor (Asif Basra), and amusing culture clashes ensue as Anderson tries to explain American business practices to the befuddled new employees. In the process, he learns important lessons about globalization -- and life. Ayesha Dharker and Matt Smith also star in director John Jeffcoat's cross-cultural comedy."

The King's Speech, Rated R. "Britain's King George VI (Colin Firth) struggles with an embarrassing stutter for years until he seeks help from unorthodox Australian speech therapist Lionel Logue (Geoffrey Rush) in this biographical drama that chalked up multiple Academy Awards, including Best Picture. Logue's pioneering treatment and unlikely friendship give the royal leader a sense of confidence that serves him and his country well during the dark days of World War II."

The Company Men, Rated R. "Written, directed and produced by John Wells ("The West Wing"), this indie drama stars Ben Affleck as a successful businessman who comes face-to-face with America's downsizing epidemic when he loses his job and is forced to take a construction gig. Rounding out the all-star cast are Kevin Costner as Affleck's brother-in-law, Tommy Lee Jones as a conflicted corporate bigwig and Chris Cooper as a paranoid executive."

* 4. Documentary

180 Degrees South, Rated PG. "Inspired by pioneering outdoorsman Yvon Chouinard's freewheeling 1968 van trip to Patagonia, South America, a band of bliss-seeking surfer-mountaineers sets out -- in 2007, by boat -- to remake the journey in this adventure documentary. Jeff Johnson and his buddies hug the coast, stopping at the Galapagos Islands and Easter Island before arriving in Patagonia -- a region that's still breathtaking but is now besieged by environmental threats."

Exit Through the Gift Shop, Rated R. "Amateur filmmaker Thierry Guetta's project to chronicle the underground world of street art takes a fascinating twist when he meets Banksy, an elusive British stencil artist, in this Independent Spirit Award winner for Best Documentary. Unimpressed with Guetta's footage, Banksy takes over filmmaking duties while Guetta reinvents himself as a street artist and -- much to Banksy's surprise -- instantly becomes a darling of the Los Angeles art scene."
