What The World Needs Now...

Microfiction is designed to impact and impress with the smallest amount of words, leaving us thinking about it for weeks on end.

To celebrate bite-sized fiction with big ideas, Brisbane Writers Festival is excited to announce the 2018 Microfiction Competition. Presented by The University of Queensland, the competition invites entrants to submit fiction between 100 and 200 words that somehow involves this year’s festival theme, “what the world needs now.”

It can be speculative fiction, romance, crime, or contemporary storytelling; it can be set in the present, past, or future; it can be optimistic or present a dark hypothetical so long as the story tells us “what the world needs now.”  The stories will be judged on their originality, use of language, and creativity and three winners will be selected across three categories to share in a cash prize.

$1000 will be awarded in the Open Category, $650 to a university student, and $350 to a high school student. The three winning entries, and six runners-up, will be invited to read their work at a special BWF event at 2.15pm on Saturday 8 September.

Entries are to be submitted online using the Entry Form. The competition closes 11:59pm AEST on Sunday 12 August.

Terms and conditions are available for download on the web page.
