The Aleutians East Borough (AEB), in conjunction with 5 municipal jurisdictions and 8 Tribal jurisdictions, is updating their Multi-Jurisdictional Hazard Mitigation Plan (MJHMP). This Plan will be an update of AEB's 2021 HMP, an update and incorporation of the City of Cold Bay's 2022 HMP, and a first-edition plan for 7 Tribes.
The jurisdictions participating in the project include the Aleutians East Borough, Agdaagux Tribe of King Cove, City of Akutan, City of Cold Bay, City of False Pass, City of King Cove, City of Sand Point, Native Village of Akutan, Native Village of Belkofski, Native Village of False Pass, Native Village of Nelson Lagoon, Native Village of Unga, Pauloff Harbor Tribe, and the Qagan Tayagungin Tribe of Sand Point.
The Aleutian Pribilof Islands Association (APIA) has contracted Fairweather Science, LLC to facilitate and guide the Planning Team through the HMP update process.
Once completed, each jurisdiction will adopt the HMP and it will be submitted to the State of Alaska Department of Homeland Security & Emergency Management (DHS&EM) and then to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for final review and approval. Once the adopted plan is approved by FEMA, the jurisdictions will be eligible to apply for grant funding to protect the jurisdiction's assets and residents from natural hazards.
